OTP 102: OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT SKILLS

CREDIT HOURS = 3

PREREQUISITE:
Admission to Ophthalmic Assistant Program or request Special Status Admission for attendance on a non-credit basis. Classes taken under Special Status Admission will not be applied toward a program certificate. For national certification eligibility, candidates must complete either a home study course or attend an approved program for ophthalmic assistants. This class is part of an approved program for the Ophthalmic Assistant certification. Call DIO for complete program information and application.

DESCRIPTION:
Through laboratory demonstration and practice students will be introduced to those skills that must be mastered through clinical practicum or on-the-job experience. The aim of this 12-week session is to familiarize entry-level students with a protocol for using ophthalmic equipment. The course grade is based on attendance, weekly written quizzes, a mid-term, and a final examination.

ITS 108: COA Annual Review

When: April 5-6, 2003

Prerequisites: Eligibility for JCAHPO’s certification examination at the Assistant level. This means completion of an approved educational program or Independent Study Course plus one year of work experience with an ophthalmologist.
Description: Content areas for the Assistant Exam are divided into three sessions at DIO. You can register for one, two, or all three sessions. This series will not be submitted to JCAHPO for continuing education credit recognition. Classes will be a combination of lecture and discussion with worksheet exercises.

Topics for ITS 108-B include visual acuity & histories, instrument maintenance, tonometry, and glaucoma.

Topics for ITS 108-C include basic skills & lensometry, patient services, and aseptic technique.

ITS 208: COT/COMT Annual Review

When: May 3-4, 2003

Prerequisites: Eligibility for JCAHPO’s certification examination at the Technician level. COMT candidates may also benefit by participation in this review.

Description: Content areas for the Technician level certification examinations will be covered in four sessions. This series will be submitted to JCAHPO for continuing education credit approval. Up to 14 credits may be approved for this two-day program. See page 4 for the session topics.

Topics on Day One will include clinical optics, low vision aids, contact lenses, visual fields, tonometry, and glaucoma.

Topics on Day Two will include ocular motility, ocular pharmacology, ophthalmic photography, and ocular manifestations of systemic disease.

Course price includes continental breakfast, beverages, and lunch. An informational flyer will be available in March.
