The DIO is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization in Grosse Pointe Park, MI. DIO is devoted to matters pertaining to the eye and vision.

WHAT IS THE DIO?The DIO was founded in 1972 to provide the support and tools necessary to enhance independence for the visually impaired and blind; develop career opportunities in the allied health field that will provide better trained, caring ophthalmic technicians; and help provide answers to baffling problems related to the eye and vision through research. People served include:
- Visually impaired & blind
- Families & care givers of the visually impaired
- Young people seeking an interesting, valuable and relatively new and expanding career field
- Ophthalmologists & Allied Health Professionals
- Other vision health organizations
- General publicOver 5,000 persons are reached each year. Thousands more benefit from evaluations performed by Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology trained allied health professionals who find employment in physicians' offices throughout the metro area.
Our Vision
The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (DIO) will be a world class resource preventing loss of sight; helping lift the burden of the visually impaired, and promoting their independence.
Our Mission
The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology is a charitable organization whose mission is to assist and educate the visually impaired, help preserve vision by public and professional education and conduct research related to the eye.
