Library of Congress ISBN 1-56091-210-3
Edited by: Ronald Barker and Anthony Harding
This is a collection of articles about a dozen great early designers with contributions by some of the best writers in the automotive world. The designers and their contributions are:
| The Bollees
(Jacques Ick) Frederick Lanchester Henry M. Leland Hans Ledwinka Marc Birkigt Ferdinand Porsche Harry Miller Vittorio Jano Gabriel Voisin Alec Issigonis Dante Giacosa Colin Chapman |
First steam-driven
vehicle on the road in 1878 Pioneering designer-constructor Conceived the V-8 Cadillac Visionary Austrio-Czech designer Designer of the Hispano-Suiza cars Possibly most versatile automobile engineer yet Designs put American racing on the map Did same as above for Alpha Romeo Switched from planes to autos after WWI Creator of the Mini Designer of landmark Fiat cars Acknowledged pace-setter of the Grand Prix scene |
This book is an especially important addition to the automotive design literature since it highlights some of the early engineers who "designed" automobiles. While most of these vehicles were designed in an era preceding the evolvement of a true automobile design profession, the work of Hans Ledwinka (especially the air cooled V-8 streamliner A-type 87 1937), Marc Birkigt's 1934 type 68-small BIS and the Porsche 1946 Cisitalia GP were so far ahead of their time as to truly point the way for design futures to come. This book is complete with line drawings and some early photographs; but it is noteworthy primarily because of the historical significance of the fine automotive writers who are included.
THE ULTIMATE CLASSIC CAR BOOK
Quentin Willson
Published by: DK Publishing Inc 95 Madison Ave New York, NY 10016
Library of Congress ISBN 6-7894-0159-2
When Quentin Willson and David Selby cooperate to produce a book on the ultimate classic car it can't be anything but a pictorial editorial and historical success. The article on the Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, the Ferrari 400 GT and the Lamborghini Countach 5000 stand out among a collection of some 90 of the best designed classic cars in the history of automotive design. It's almost impossible not to find your favorite classic car within these covers. A special section in the Introduction on the classic car phenomenon, why a car "becomes a classic", and a three or four page section on, "How to buy a classic car" make this a must-have book for the serious car collector and the auto design nut, as well.
Photographically, technically, and performance data-wise, this is a book to "satisfy the enthusiast and expert alike."
50 YEARS OF AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE DESIGN 1930-1980
Dick Nesbitt
This Edition Published by: Beekman House One Park Ave New York, NY 10016
Library of Congress ISBN 0-517-49042-0
Many know Dick Nesbitt as industrial designer whose career had his beginning at the Ford Motor Conpany. His marvelous artwork, combined with his intimate familiarity with the design world, make this an essential component of the auto design library. The sections on the 1940-41 Lincoln Continental, the 1963 Riviera, and the Studebaker Avanti are especially well done.
The book is produced by the editors of Collectible Automobile. If one wishes to explore automobile design this is a brief, 64-page introduction to an amazing world. "A car is a product and reflection of its time, the creation of people responding to the social and economic forces around them." That's true, especially, of fine automobile design and this book is a great way to start the process.
AMERICAN CARS
Leon Mandel
Distributed by: Workman Publishing Company Inc 1 West 39th St New York, NY 10018
Library of Congress ISBN 0-941434-19-2
Most of us know Leon as the one time Senior Editor of both Car and Driver and Motor Trend magazines. He has probably written 500 succinct, pithy articles on automobiles. He's always combined this basic auto knowledge with a fine sense of the design profession. His comments relative to design, coupled with the photographic work of Baron Wolman (Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Vogue, Esquire, Rolling Stone magazines) and Lucinda Lewis, the San Francisco industrial photographer, combine to produce an amazing pictorial tribute to the American automobile. While many of the automobiles described precede the era of an actual design profession (the Model T Ford, Pierce-Arrow, early Stanleys, Chryslers, and brass-class vehicles) many of them, too, cannot be overlooked by the automobile design world simply because of their sculptural quality. Clearly, that's true of the Duesenbergs, DeLoreans and other magnificent American cars, as well.
Leon Mandel is the author of many books, including Speed With Style written with Peter Revson (Doubleday), and William Fish Harrah: The Life and Times of A Gambling Magnate (Doubleday). In this fine book, Leon's editorial prowess combines with two great automotive photographers to produce a simply magnificent volume.

The author, Jonathan Wood, has written extensively for Classic Car magazine, is the winner of Renault's Pierre Dreyfus Award for outstanding journalistic effort for his work on the history of the "Austin Seven." At the time he wrote 50 Years of Classic Cars, Jonathan had already produced 26 books, many of them about automobiles and their historical significance. In 1993 he received the Gugnot Award for his work Bughatti: The Man and The Marque.
Any book that celebrates fine automobile design should include great photography, and this book, which describes 129 automobiles, contains 500 color photographs of exteriors, interiors, engines, and sculptural curves. It is a celebration of the best the automotive design community has to offer.

A CENTURY OF AUTOMOTIVE STYLE 100 YEARS OF AMERICAN CAR DESIGN
Michael Lamm
Dave HollsPublished by: Lamm-Morada Publishing Co Inc POB 7607 Stockton, CA 95267
Library of Congress ISBN 0-932128-07-6
When a premiere contemporary auto design, Dave Holls, combines with one of the finest writers in the automotive world, Michael Lamm, the result must be a turing point in the history of automobile design writing. That clearly is the case with this encyclopedic work on the subject.
Dave Holls, who began at General Motors in 1952 under the legendary Harley Earl, rose to head GM's advanced design facility and became Director of Corporate Design, and second in command under the renowned Chuck Jordan. He played a major design role in cars as diverse as the 1970's OpeL the 1968 Corvette, and the '59 Cadillac.
A graduate of Michigan State with a degree in industrial design, Holls rose to the top of the automobile design world. He is a former honorary chief judge at Pebble Beach, and was a co-founder of Detroit's Meadowbrook Concours d'Elegance. Dave has been an inspiration and an always reliable source of advice for Eyes on Design held at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House each year on Father's Day. He is a true gentleman in an often prickly profession.
Michael Lamm is an historian who has had a love affair with automobiles since the age of 16 when he bought his first car, a Cadillac V-16 for $90. He has been interested in the history of automotive design since his boyhood days in South Texas. Few writers are as careful about the facts as Mike Lamm.
This is the absolute essential first book on the shelf of anyone who wishes to learn more about the history of automobile design in the United States.
ART OF THE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE
Nick Georgano
Published by: Smithmark Publishers 16 E 32nd St New York, NY 10016
Library of Congress ISBN 0-7651-9632-8
Although well written, the Georgano book is much more a tribute to Nicky Wright, Britain's Number One automobile photographer. Nick Georgano's 30-plus books on this subject, combined with Nicky Wright's 13, give professional authority to anyone who might question how these gentlemen might so audaciously produce a book with the inferred importance of "Art of the American Automobile". But then, Gordon Buehrig's famous line, "Automobile design is 'Rolling sculpture'" really does make the work of the great stylists "art."
It is the story, of course, of the great designers, and includes some truly valuable interviews and behind the scenes anecdotes from the studios where the vehicles were designed.
A book well worth having for the automobile design enthusiast.
